How
to Pick the Perfect Baby Name
(Or at least one
that you can live with.)
For simplicity
sake, in most cases, we will just refer to a baby
'name' instead of baby names, in plural. If you
are seeking more than one baby name, all the
following suggestions should still apply.
1) Decide whether there are any
family names or other names that you feel obliged
or otherwise compelled to use.
- If this is the case,
congratulations... you are half way there to
naming the child (I am assuming that you aren't
all the way there or you probably wouldn't be
reading this... unless you are rethinking the
names that you have picked out... if so, keep
reading). Now you just need to focus on another
name that sounds good and flows with the name that
you have already selected. Don't forget to write
out the names... do the initials spell anything
naughty or rude (nobody wants to be a SHT)?
Oh, and if you are stuck using
some family names that you would rather not use...
just remember... it is your baby, you have the
final veto. And if you are really, really stuck...
remember that each baby brings their own
personality to a name and once the baby is born,
the name will quickly begin to feel natural and
normal.
2) Decide the type of name that
you would like: a trendy name, a popular name, an
old-fashioned name, a new version of an old name,
a name that begins with a specific letter or has a
certain sound at the end and so on.
- Knowing the type of baby name that you are
seeking will help you to eliminate a lot of names
from your list and may help you to narrow your
search a little.
"My husband and I really wanted to give our baby
girl a name that was not overly common, yet
wouldn't get her made fun of. We really liked soft
sounding names like Sarah. So upon looking through
a baby names book in the 'S' section we stumbled
upon Sophie - an older, but endearing name, with a
very soft, girlie sound to it. And, at the time,
it wasn't very common... which is exactly what we
wanted." - Kathy Hamidovic, Owner,

A great book I would recommend reading to help you
get a feel for the type of name you are looking
for is Puffy, Xena, Quentin, Uma
(and 10,000 Other
Names for Your New Millennium Baby) by Joal Ryan.
This book not only provides the meaning of many
baby names, but also labels each name in a way
that you know whether it is trendy or
traditional and so on. The author really makes you
think about names in a way you may not have thought
of them before.
